Can't open the garage door. That means can't get my bike out, and if power went out, can't get the generator running. There's only one way in, though there are two windows to the garage. They're both blocked by shelving. Mind you, the windows were built BEFORE the Garage existed. Thanks, dad, for not having a legit door into the gaeage.

o man, this was my complete fear at our old house. it was built in 2005 with a detached garage. it had not windows and no pedestrian door.

Even worse it didn't have a direct wired button into the house, so we had to use another garage clicker. When we used to keep both vehicles in the garage I was always paranoid the power would go out and we'd be screwed/not able to leave. Thankfully once the Montego arrived there was always one drive-able car outside the garage.

I lived in a house with a non-functioning garage door once. You can't just lift it up?

Wait. There's no pedestrian door and the installer didn't include a keyed release on the door itself? Wow, that sucks!

I managed to lift it up by an inch but that was it.

You could only unlock it by key and by the time I tried to open it, I had to struggle with the thing before I could lift it up about an inch.

I've just realized. I've never lived in a place with an automatic garage door, they've always been manually opening ones....how freaking archaic.

Usually, you need to decouple the motor. If you pull the handle to disconnect the motor, you can usually lift up the door then - the trick is to make sure it won't re-latch if you close it behind you.

I have a legit door in our garage, but in the winter it's blocked by a car. It opens inward, so it's actually blocked. I put automatic openers on the 'real' doors last year, and this year I realized that if I lose power, I'm pretty much screwed until the power comes back on. I will be installing a new door this summer.

It's one of those roll up ones with no motor.

I see. So it's frozen up or otherwise jammed/out of commission? What's really bad with the non-power ones is if the helper spring breaks, because then the door is insanely heavy. We had one that would get stuck at the top, too - if the panel comes too far forward it can jam on the top of the frame.
